Climate Change is a Driving Factor for Livelihood Migration, Farmers Fail to Harvest, Fishermen are Threatened

Erratic climate changes make people flock to migrate, especially livelihood migration.

This livelihood migration stems from failed agricultural crops and unpromising marine products.

These two ancient works still rely on weather conditions because they are done in traditional ways. Farmers are threatened with crop failure, fishermen are trapped in bank debt.

adbmi.org – In the early morning the fishermen were ready with their nets. The sounds of fishing boat engines responding to each other on the shoreline of Poton Bako, Poton Bako Hamlet, Jerowaru Village, Jerowaru District, East Lombok Regency.

Don't forget the basic provisions to support your stomach when you arrive at sea.

The sun is still not visible. The lights of fishing boats flood the sea. Countless colors. This indicates that many fishermen came down this morning before dawn.

The sounds of the speakers from the prayer room could be heard from a distance. Indicates that dawn has arrived. You can see several fishing boats starting to pull over. Meanwhile, the collectors were standing in a row waiting for the fishermen's catch.

Indra Wahyudi sits in the yard of his house. He was re-knitting the nets that had been broken due to being used in the early morning. The result of catching fish today is enough to meet his daily needs.

Yudi is the familiar name of the man who has moved towards the head of the three. With his wife and two children, he lives in his house close to the beach.

Yudi is considered lucky, he has a decent house. This is different from the houses around it, which were built with wood and are even rickety.

Even so, Yudi is one of those who wants to migrate to Malaysia. He plans to come back again. Because he had previously migrated.

His desire to go abroad again is because of the erratic catch plus the ever-increasing demand.

“When it comes to marine products, we don't have enough. "Moreover, the weather is crazy," he explained when met by the author on 6/8/2024.

If the weather is bad, he does not go to sea. The threat is much heavier, even risking your life. In one month, he can earn as much as 1 million to 2 million. Depending on the weather, if it is good and the catch is abundant there will be more.

Climate Causes Tobacco Crop Failure to Increase, Crime Rates in Southern Parts

Tobacco is a leading commodity in West Nusa Tenggara province, especially for the southern island of Lombok. Tobacco is a diamond that provides society with sufficiency.

Every time the tobacco harvest season arrives, the turnover rate is very high. Apart from that, it also recruits a high number of workers.

The workers work from planting tobacco to oven (burning) the tobacco which requires a lot of energy.

It's different if the harvest fails, the money is reduced. People are even willing to go into debt to meet their needs.

On average, crop failure is caused by uncertain climate changes. Not infrequently, when the planting season approaches the harvest, it rains heavily. It can flood rice fields. Meanwhile, tobacco doesn't really need too much water.

This crop failure caused the crime rate to increase rapidly in the southern area. This was stated by the village secretary (sekdes) of Jerowaru village, Jerowaru sub-district, Wildanjauhari.

"There will be a lot of theft, muggings and other crimes," explained Wildanjauhari while taking part in a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on Migration Studies on the Impact of Climate Change.

Regarding Population Migration carried out by ADBMI in collaboration with RDI and IOM at the Jerowaru village office yesterday, 6/8/2024.

Wildanjauhari said that this was not without reason, because tobacco is a favorite for the people whose results can reach tens and even hundreds of millions when sold.
