BP3MI NTB and the Manpower Service cannot work alone, they need to work together to guard safe migration

The West Nusa Tenggara Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection and Service Center (BP3MI) and the Manpower and Transmigration Office (Disnakertras) are the main stakeholders in realizing the protection and empowerment of Indonesian migrant workers. BP3MI and the district/city Disnakertras are the key to realizing safe, healthy and documented migration.

The two OPDs are responsible for the survival of Indonesian migrant workers in the country of placement. Not only that, after the PMI return, their task is also to empower.

We cannot close our eyes, both OPDs cannot run alone. There needs to be cooperation between parties, both at the OPD level, mass organizations, NGOs and local organizations at the village level. Because, the estuary of all PMI problems must be resolved through mutual cooperation.

Who knows what was on their minds when they saw so many news hunters approaching them.

Noerman, his nickname, looked tired of holding back his deep sorrow. This was the 34th time he had seen a coffin land in West Nusa Tenggara. The bodies were titled foreign exchange heroes.

Several times he tried to smile, wiping away sweat under the hot midday sun, Friday, 08/09/2024, when escorting the body of Gafur, a resident of Waringin Village, Suralaga District, East Lombok Regency to his final resting place.

The batik shirt he was wearing looked wet with his sweat. Either because the sun was so hot that afternoon, or because of the many questions about his "performance" in escorting Indonesian migrant workers from NTB.

There were dozens of journalists following him, monitoring the movements of the PMI protector. One wrong move would be fatal for him and the agency he leads.

All Parties Need Cooperation to Make Migration Safe

The Head of the Indonesian Migrant Workers Advocacy (ADBMI), Roma Hidayat strongly condemned the shooting incident that took Gafur's life in Malaysia. The incident was heartbreaking and a lesson for all.

Roma assessed that there needed to be cooperation between the parties, especially the sensitivity of the village government in monitoring the issue of Safe Migration.

"All Indonesian migrant workers end up in villages. So it is important that villages are also sensitive and involved," said the chairman of the ADBMI Foundation.

Law number 18 of 2017 concerning the Protection and Empowerment of Indonesian Migrant Workers and Their Families. The law clearly records the duties and functions of the central government, regions to the village level.

"With the existence of village funds, it should be possible to facilitate the community," said Roma.

However, continued the ADBMI Chairman, the problem boils down to village disagreements. The PMI issue is not taken seriously. "It's just a deep-rooted problem. The community is used to being PMI, so it's not the village's responsibility."

Roma encourages the need for cooperation from all parties. From the top level to the community.
